BRIEFLY MOTORCYCLIST, 20, KILLED IN COLLISION.


SHERMAN OAKS - A 20-year-old man from Brazil was killed early Thursday when his rented motorcycle collided with a car, then crashed into a building in Sherman Oaks, police said.

The man, whose name was withheld, was traveling east on Ventura Boulevard Ventura Boulevard is one of the primary east-west thouroughfares in the San Fernando Valley; as it was originally a part of the El Camino Real (the trail between Spanish missions), Ventura Boulevard is the oldest route in the San Fernando Valley. Glendale resident slain near home

Arrow hits a man in national forest

ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST The Angeles National Forest (ANF) was established by executive order on December 20, 1892 as the San Gabriel Timberland Reserve. Police evacuate college building

MOORPARK - Police evacuated a day-care center and classrooms at Moorpark College on Thursday after an ammunition box was found in a storage closet, but the box contained nothing hazardous, authorities said.

The box was found about 10:45 a.m. inside a locked storage room in the Applied Arts building, which houses classrooms, offices and a child-development center.

A sheriff's bomb squad found that the box did not contain explosives, and classes resumed about 12:15 p.m.

NORTH HOLLYWOOD - Three regional grant recipients were named Thursday to tap nearly $200,000 in education funding from the SBC Foundation to promote college readiness for low-income students in North Hollywood.

The grants from the charitable giving arm of SBC Communications Inc. support GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs), a federal program that helps youth from low-income communities attain a postsecondary education. The local grant recipients are: James Madison Middle School James Madison Middle School is the name of several schools in the United States:

Builder set to file new zoning plan

MOORPARK - Developer Comstock Homes plans to file a zoning change application to build up to 50 homes on an 8.8-acre parcel north of the Moorpark Town Center after getting a green light from the City Council.

The council opposed initial plans to seek very high-density zoning for the commercial site and build 70 detached homes.

The project site is vacant except for the Birkenshaw residence, which was built in the 1920s by one of the city's pioneer families and is considered a local landmark.
