BRIEFLY MORE TALKS SLATED FOR GROCERS, UNION.


Striking grocery clerks and three supermarket chains will resume stalled contract talks next week, the union announced Friday as religious leaders urged an end to the nearly 7-week-old dispute.

Negotiations will resume Tuesday between officials of the United Food and Commercial Workers The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union is a labor union representing approximately 1.4 million workers in the United States and Canada in many industries, including agriculture, health care, meatpacking, poultry and food processing, manufacturing, textile and  union, Safeway Inc., Kroger Co. and Albertson's Inc. union spokeswoman Barbara Maynard said.

A previous round of talks broke off Sunday night Sunday Night, later named Michelob Presents Night Music, was an NBC late-night television show which aired for two seasons between 1988 and 1990 as a showcase for jazz and eclectic musical artists. .

``We're ready to go around the clock to resolve this dispute,'' Maynard said.

She declined to comment on details of the talks.

Calls seeking comment from Kroger Co., which owns the Ralphs supermarkets; Safeway Inc., which operates the Vons and Pavilion stores; and the federal mediator overseeing negotiations were not immediately returned Friday.

Week left to enroll in tutoring program

Parents have until Friday to sign up their children for free after-school tutoring, a program provided by the federal No Child Left Behind Act The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (Public Law 107-110), commonly known as NCLB (IPA: /ˈnɪkəlbiː/), is a United States federal law that was passed in the House of Representatives on May 23, 2001 .

Although 186,000 Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population.  students are eligible to take part in the program, only 15,000 have enrolled so far.

State traffic deaths up from last year

That's up from nine fatalities in the same period last year. One person was killed on Los Angeles County roads during last year's Thanksgiving, according to the CHP.

Santa Paula man arrested in crash

A Santa Paula driver remained hospitalized Friday after a single-vehicle crash that killed three of his friends early on Thanksgiving Day.

Tomas Mercer Jr., 22, of Santa Paula was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter vehicular manslaughter n. the crime of causing the death of a human being due to illegal driving of an automobile, including gross negligence, drunk driving, reckless driving, or speeding.  and felony drunk driving after the 1:55 a.m. crash Thursday on a rural road between Ventura and Santa Paula. Mercer's condition was unavailable, but the California Highway Patrol said he suffered major injuries in the accident.

Timothy Coultas, 23, of Santa Paula and Rebecca Singer-Beilin, 22, of Ventura were pronounced dead at the scene after being ejected from Mercer's pickup truck. Michael Frick, 23, of Ventura also was pronounced dead at the scene.
