BRIEFLY MORE INMATES ARE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS.


Nearly 25 percent of inmates in Los Angeles County jails are illegal immigrants and many have prior criminal arrest records, according to a report released Wednesday. The report, conducted by the Countywide Criminal Justice Coordinating Committee, found the percentage of illegal immigrants is up from 11 percent in 1990. "The cost to the taxpayers is $83 million a year, about a quarter of the sheriff's custody budget," Supervisor Michael D. Woman escapes would-be rapist

CHATSWORTH - A woman's terror ended Wednesday night when she escaped from a would-be rapist and ran into a police officer in the neighborhood, officials said.

The woman said she was kidnapped about 10:05 p.m. Wednesday by a man in a sport utility vehicle that stopped near Lurline Avenue and Kingsbury Street, said Sgt. Kristie Romero of the Los Angeles Police Department "LAPD" and "L.A.P.D." redirect here. For other uses, see LAPD (disambiguation).

The woman escaped and went to a nearby home, running into a resident in the neighborhood who happened to be an LAPD officer at the Devonshire Division, Romero said.

2 named judges in Ventura County

VENTURA - Two local lawyers were appointed Wednesday as judges on the Ventura County Superior Court bench.

Frederick Bysshe, 63, of Ojai, who has been in private practice in Ventura County since 1970, will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Joe Hadden.

Tari L. Cody, 41, of Ventura, a private attorney who represents public agencies on a variety of issues, succeeds Judge Steven Perren, who was elevated to the state Court of Appeal.

The new judges, appointed by Gov. Gray Davis, each will earn $122,628 a year.
