BRIEFLY MONTGOMERY WINS THE 100 IN SWEDEN.

American Tim Montgomery won the 100-meter dash Tuesday despite four false starts in the event at the DN Galan meet in Stockholm, Sweden.

Montgomery was four-hundredths of a second faster in the qualifying earlier, winning his heat in 10.04.

Svetlana Feofanova broke the women's European pole vault record.

She cleared 15 feet, 8 1/4 inches - the second-best height ever cleared by a woman - on her first try for the new European record, then challenged Stacy Dragila's world record of 15-9 1/4. The Russian's third and last attempt at 15-9 3/4 was her best.
