BRIEFLY MISSION COLLEGE GETS HEALTH CENTER.


SYLMAR - Mission College will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony today for its Student Health Center.

Northeast Valley Health Corp. and the community college will sponsor the ceremony at 10 a.m. at the new center, 13356 Eldridge Ave. Students used to obtain health care at the San Fernando Health Center, an off-campus facility.

LAUSD may hire former principal

Los Angeles Unified School District officials hope to name a new high- level administrator for high school and middle school issues, Deputy Superintendent of Instruction Maria Ott OTT - Over the top.

If the LAUSD board approves, Sylvia Rousseau, now associate director of the school-university partnership program at the University of Southern California, will become the district's assistant superintendent for secondary education and school support services, said Ott.

Ott said Rousseau has 32 years experience in education jobs, ranging from teaching English at Monroe High School in 1978 to serving as principal of Santa Monica High School in 1993. Her name is expected to be submitted to the board Nov. 14, Ott said.

City department heads appointed

Mayor Richard Riordan announced the appointments Tuesday of general managers for two departments: Lillian Kawasaki for community development and Detrich Brown for environmental affairs.

Woman, 49, killed in Valley collision

VAN NUYS - A 49-year-old Panorama City woman was killed in a two-car crash in Van Nuys, police said Tuesday.

The woman was fatally injured about 5 p.m. Monday at Woodman Avenue and Strathern Street, said Los Angeles police Officer Lyle Michelson.

Authorities withheld her name pending notification of relatives.

She was driving a 1994 Geo Prizm that collided with a 1991 Nissan driven by Jose Lopez, 21, also of Panorama City, Michelson said.

City receives calls to replace lights

Monthly calls reporting out-of-service street lights doubled in October during the city's Operation Bright Lights campaign, which runs twice a year, coinciding with the beginning and ending of Daylight Savings Time, Los Angeles officials said.

WEST HOLLYWOOD - Gay and lesbian Americans, fearing deportation of immigrants with whom they live as couples, have a friend in West Hollywood government.

This week the City Council supported a resolution declaring West Hollywood a City of Refuge for such couples, as San Francisco had previously done.

Building collapse blamed on water

NEWPORT BEACH - The partial collapse of a 5,000-square-foot building that juts out over a finger of the Newport Harbor was caused by water damage on the reinforcing bars of a main supporting beam, a city official said Tuesday.
