LCC board member to seek county job

Lane Community College Board member Tony McCown said he will make an official declaration Tuesday of his candidacy for the open West Lane county commissioner (District 1) position. McCown will make the announcement at 12:30 p.m. at the Wayne Morse Free Speech Plaza outside the Lane County Public Service Building in Eugene.

McCown is a marketing and outreach consultant with Millennial Associates LLC, a newly formed company. He graduated from LCC in 2005, completed his bachelor's degree at the University of Oregon in 2007 and is pursuing a master's degree.

Two other candidates - Jay Bozievich and Anselmo Villanueva - already have announced their intentions to seek the seat held by Bill Fleenor, who has indicated that he will not seek re-election.

Some state beaches opened to clamming

The Oregon Department of Agriculture and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife on Monday announced the reopening of recreational razor clamming from the south jetty of Yaquina Bay to the California border, and recreational mussel harvesting from Bastendorf Beach near Charleston to the California border.

Shellfish samples taken last week indicated that levels of paralytic shellfish poisoning toxins had dropped below the alert level. The entire coast has been closed to recreational harvesting of razor clams and mussels since Sept. 21.

All razor clamming from the mouth of the Columbia River to the north jetty of Yaquina Bay remains closed. All mussel harvesting north of Bastendorf Beach also remains closed.

Coastal scallops are not affected by the closure when only the adductor muscle is eaten. The consumption of whole recreationally harvested scallops is not recommended. Crab and commercially harvested oysters are not affected by the closure.

For more information, call ODA's shellfish safety information hotline at 800-448-2474 or visit the shellfish closures Web site at oregon.gov/ODA/FSD/shellfish_status.shtml.
