Ventura deputies sue the county

VENTURA - The union representing Ventura County sheriff's deputies sued the county for $100 million, alleging it improperly used retirement system money.

The suit, filed Friday in Superior Court, alleges the county avoided paying its share into the retirement fund, instead relying on profits made by investing pension funds during the economic boom of the 1990s.

County officials say the disputed funds came from a 1995 bond issue and called the suit a tactic to gain more money for the pension fund.

The 830 members of the sheriff's association are negotiating for a new contract. They want a retroactive pension formula that would allow some members to retire at 50 and earn 75 percent of their pay instead of the current 50 percent. Those benefits would cost an estimated $100 million.
