With more than 100 cases of West Nile virus West Nile virus, microorganism and the infection resulting from it, which typically produces no symptoms or a flulike condition. The town hall meeting, sponsored by Los Angeles City Councilman Tony Cardenas Tony Cardenas served in the California State Assembly. In the Assembly, he had the powerful position of chair of the Budget Committee. He is now a Los Angeles City Councilman, representing the 6th district, which includes parts of the San Fernando Valley. , is scheduled for Sept. 13 at the Marvin Braude Marvin Braude (August 11, 1920—December 7, 2005)served as Los Angeles City Councilman for the 11th district from 1965 to 1997. At various times Mr. Braude (pronounced BROW-dee) served as chair of the Finance and Revenue Committee, the Environmental Quality and Waste  Constituent Service Center, 6262 Van Nuys Blvd. in Van Nuys. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. Clusters of the occasionally fatal, mosquito-spread disease have been detected in Van Nuys and Northridge.

Pedestrian, 65, hit, killed by car

CHATSWORTH - A 65-year-old transient was hit by a car and killed before dawn Thursday while crossing a boulevard against a red light, police said.

The unidentified man was struck at 5 a.m. while crossing Topanga Canyon Boulevard at Devonshire Street against the no-walk light, said LAPD 1. LAPD - Link Access Procedure on the D channel.

Oxnard man faces count of fee theft

An Oxnard man was arrested Thursday on suspicion of stealing nearly $5,000 in parking fees from Seaside Park, the home of the Ventura County Fair, authorities said.

Richard Tucker, 52, faces a single felony count of grand theft, prosecutor Marc Leventhal said. Tucker's arraignment A criminal proceeding at which the defendant is officially called before a court of competent jurisdiction, informed of the offense charged in the complaint, information, indictment, or other charging document, and asked to enter a plea of guilty, not guilty, or as otherwise permitted  is set for today. If convicted, he faces up to three years in prison.

Tucker has worked as an event services manager. Investigators believe Tucker underreported parking revenues by $4,900 since March 2003, he said.

False terror claim results in arrest

A Los Feliz man was arrested Thursday for allegedly falsely reporting to federal agents that his former girlfriend's husband was involved in terrorism, according to an FBI representative.

Asa Arava, 60, was taken into custody after agents executed an arrest warrant. He later made an initial appearance before a federal magistrate, according to Laura Eimiller of the FBI.

A federal grand injury indicted INDICTED, practice. When a man is accused by a bill of indictment preferred by a grand jury, he is said to be indicted.  Arava on Tuesday on one count of making a false statement, Eimiller said.

Officer is charged with bribery count

A Los Angeles police officer accused of seeking a $500 bribe from a Korean immigrant who wanted to report a crime was charged with bribery and filing a false police report Thursday, prosecutors said.

Students unable to pay fee can stay

Community colleges in Los Angeles and Ventura counties will not drop students from classes who cannot pay the increased tuition fees passed by the state Legislature last week, district officials announced Thursday.

California community college students were advised last week that tuition was increasing from $18 to $26 per unit. Many students had already paid their tuition when Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed the bill on Aug. 11, district officials said.

Students will be referred to their school's financial aid office to seek help, but will not be dropped from classes, district officials said. Community colleges in the state have seen fees rise by 136 percent in the past two years.
