BRIEFLY MAN WITH 39 CATS GETS PROBATION.

A man who had 39 cats living with him in a Van Nuys residential motel was sentenced Friday to three years probation and ordered not to have any animals during that time.

Van Nuys Superior Court Commissioner Mitchell Block also ordered Phillip Appleman, 42, to serve 200 hours of community service and to undergo psychological counseling, said Deputy City Attorney Don Cocek.

The commissioner warned Appleman that he will face a six-month jail term if he violates his probation. Appleman pleaded no contest June 17 to three counts of animal cruelty.

The charges stemmed from an August 2002 search by investigators from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is any of a number of animal welfare organisations whose operations include protecting and providing shelter to animals in danger. , Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. .
