CARPINTERIA - Elezar Botello's catch has him up a creek.

The 7 1/4-pound, 28-inch-long fish was killed.

``I think he wanted to eat it,'' said state Department of Fish and Game Warden Wes Boyle. ``He said he was walking over a bridge, saw it in the shallows and scared it into a spot where he could grab it.

``He claimed that he didn't know the creek was closed to fishing or that the fish was endangered.''

Botello was ticketed Monday morning after game officials received a tip. He was cited for fishing without a license, fishing in closed waters and the illegal taking of a rare or endangered species endangered species, any plant or animal species whose ability to survive and reproduce has been jeopardized by human activities. In 1999 the U.S. government, in accordance with the U.S. , which is a federal crime, Boyle said.

If convicted, Botello faces fines of up to $10,000 and could serve as long as a year in jail.

Ventura man dies after crash on 101

The accident occurred at 9:50 p.m. Tuesday as they drove onto the on- ramp and the driver lost control of the vehicle, officials said. Hospital records indicated the victim had alcohol in his system and was under the influence, officials said.

College president earns top honor

MOORPARK - Moorpark College Moorpark College is a California-state funded community college located on a 134 acre (542,000 m²) property reclining on a hill in Moorpark, a town in Ventura County, California.  President Jim Walker has become the first Ventura County community college president to receive the top honor from the Association of California Community College Administrators.

Walker received the Harry Buttimer Distinguished Administrator Award, which honors distinguished leadership and service to the college and the community, given to a top administrator from one of the 71 California community college districts or 106 community colleges.

Walker received the award along with Jane Kehoe, the president and superintendent of Long Beach College, at ACCCA's recent 25th annual conference in Pasadena.

High school joins Project Clean Cut

CAMARILLO - Students from Camarillo High School participated in a ``Mow-off'' on Wednesday to launch Project Clean Cut - an effort to recycle gas-powered lawn mowers believed to cause environmental pollutions.

Student Body Vice President Jason Soyster won the event, Set on the campus football field, by completing a mow of the field in two 50-yard passes, faster than his three competitors.
