BRIEFLY MAN SOUGHT IN HIT AND RUN CRASHES.


MOORPARK - Police are seeking a man they say fled after he sideswiped another motorist before his own car stopped on the railroad tracks and was totaled by an oncoming Amtrak Amtrak, the National Railroad Passenger Corp., authorized to operate virtually all intercity passenger railroad routes in the United States. Amtrak was created by Congress in 1970 in response to more than two decades of continuous operating deficits by privately run  train.

The collision occurred about 8:20 p.m. Sunday when a car driven westbound on Old Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Avenue by Derek Burns, 25, of Moorpark was sideswiped by the unidentified man's black 1991 Ford Escort Over the years, the name 'Ford Escort' has been used for several models.

, said Sheriff's Senior Deputy Brad Clifton.

The unidentified man's car stopped on the tracks, and he got out to go to Burns, Clifton said.

But seconds later the train approached, and the man ran back to the Escort to try to move it off the tracks before fleeing, Clifton said. Police described him only as Latino, 5 feet 6 inches, with black hair and brown eyes.

Burns was treated for slight injuries and released at the scene; a passenger in Burns' car, Dorothy Gaston, 45, of Moorpark was uninjured. No one was injured on the passenger train, authorities said.

Simi students get big scholarships

SIMI VALLEY - Three local high school students received $5,000 from the Ronald Reagan Foundation as Presidential Library Scholarship winners.

Virginia Hankins and Ari Shaw from Moorpark High and Thomas Young from Simi Valley High were chosen from 84 finalists honored during a weekend event at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library Coordinates:

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Center for Public Affairs
 and Museum.

Students needed to meet various criteria, including writing a 500-word essay about a leader who most influenced their lives.

Humanitarian win for Ventura man

VENTURA - A Ventura man was named Monday as one of three UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles
UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University)
UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX
 students to receive the annual Charles E. Young Dr. Charles E. "Chuck" Young is currently Chancellor Emeritus and Professor at the UCLA School of Public Affairs. Under his skillful leadership and guidance, UCLA went from a regional college with an operating budget of $170 million to became a world class institution with expenses  Humanitarian Award for outstanding contributions and commitment to public service.

Michael A. de la Rocha, the undergraduate student body president, was recognized for organizing and participating in outreach efforts and committees aimed at addressing the low admission rates of underrepresented un·der·rep·re·sent·ed  
adj.
Insufficiently or inadequately represented: the underrepresented minority groups, ignored by the government. 
 students of color.

The other winners were Kabir J. Singh of Los Angeles and Candice Taylor of Culver City.

The winners each received $500 to be used for the humanitarian activity or program of their choice.

Calabasas woman identified in crash

CALABASAS - A 41-year-old motorist killed when her car drifted off a road and plowed into a fence post was identified Monday, the California Highway Patrol said.

Gina Ann Gilmour of Calabasas was fatally injured in the crash at 5:30 p.m. Sunday on westbound Mureau Road just south of Las Virgenes Road, the CHP CHP Chapter

Gilmour was driving a 1995 Mercedes Benz, which drifted to the right for unknown reasons and struck the fence post, authorities said. She was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene.
