BRIEFLY MAN GETS LIFE FOR KIDNAPPING, RAPE.


A 23-year-old man convicted of kidnapping, robbing and sexually assaulting two couples in Sherman Oaks last year was sentenced Wednesday to several life terms in prison, prosecutors said.

Joseph Navar Downey was found guilty March 13 by a Van Nuys Superior Court jury of 10 counts, including forcible rape, forcible oral copulation copulation /cop·u·la·tion/ (kop?u-la´shun) sexual union; the transfer of the sperm from male to female; usually applied to the mating process in nonhuman animals.

Seniors can get free beach pass

Senior citizens may park for free at Los Angeles County beaches run by the Department of Beaches and Harbors, Supervisor Michael Antonovich said Wednesday.

Individuals must be at least 62 to get the free pass from Five Star Parking, the department's parking lot contractor.

The pass is honored Monday through Friday, holidays excepted, at all county lots monitored by an attendant.

Interested seniors should contact Five Star Parking at (310) 821-1081 to make an office appointment to get a pass. Five Star's office is at 14110 Palawan Way in Marina del Rey Del Rey may refer to:

District will try to pass fix-it bond

The Los Angeles Community College District The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) is the community college district serving Los Angeles, California and some of its neighboring cities. The district had hoped for the passage of Proposition 26 in March, an initiative that would have allowed such bonds to pass by the vote of a simple majority of the electorate. It failed, however.

District spokeswoman Lynn Winter-Gross said the amount to be sought in the bond measure has not yet been determined. The district hopes to place it on the April 2001 ballot.

``They're going to evaluate the need at each individual college,'' she said.

Bernson aide will seek council seat

Gould, Myers lead university board

LONG BEACH - Los Angeles attorney Laurence K. Gould Jr. and former Clinton press secretary Dee Dee Myers were elected Wednesday as chair and vice chair, respectively, of the California State University Enrollment
 board of trustees.

Gould, a Pasadena resident, has been a trustee since 1996. He chairs the trustees' Committee on Organization and Rules and is vice chair of its Committee on Finance.

He also chaired the search for the new president of California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an .

Myers was appointed to the board last year by Gov. Gray Davis. The Los Angeles resident has her own business, Dee Dee Myers and Associates, and regularly provides political analysis on NBC's ``Today Show'' and other programs.

2 nursing homes accused of fraud

Clean-air vehicles may park for free

The Los Angeles City Council The Los Angeles City Council is the governing body of the City of Los Angeles, California, United States.  agreed Wednesday to ask for a pilot program that would allow the owners of low-emission vehicles to park for free at metered spaces citywide.

The Department of Transportation will report back to the City Council with a plan to implement the pilot program, which would provide free parking for owners of zero-emission and super-ultra-low-emission vehicles.

Vent fire damages USC-area housing

A fire sparked by a malfunctioning vent fan in a bathroom Wednesday damaged the attic of a three-story apartment building that houses a number of University of Southern California The U.S. News & World Report ranked USC 27th among all universities in the United States in its 2008 ranking of "America's Best Colleges", also designating it as one of the "most selective universities" for admitting 8,634 of the almost 34,000 who applied for freshman admission  students, authorities said.
