BRIEFLY MAN DIES AFTER SHOOTING, CRASH.


SUN VALLEY - A man who was shot at a Sun Valley gas station early Friday jumped into his sport utility vehicle and drove away before crashing into a wall of a restaurant.

The unidentified man died from his injuries in the 1 a.m. incident, said Los Angeles Police Department "LAPD" and "L.A.P.D." redirect here. For other uses, see LAPD (disambiguation).

The man was at a Unocal 76 gas station in the 8400 block of Sunland Boulevard when the gunshots were fired. Witnesses heard gunshots behind the station and saw the man drive away, Wheeling said.

He drove a short distance before the vehicle careened into the Acapulco Mexican Restaurant at 8431 Sunland Blvd., Wheeling said.

The man died at the scene. No one else was injured.

Witnesses saw a brown pickup leave the gas station after the shooting, Wheeling said.

Group to conduct holiday toy drive

SHERMAN OAKS - The Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association will hold a holiday toy drive from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at Ralphs supermarket, Ventura Boulevard Ventura Boulevard is one of the primary east-west thouroughfares in the San Fernando Valley; as it was originally a part of the El Camino Real (the trail between Spanish missions), Ventura Boulevard is the oldest route in the San Fernando Valley. New, unwrapped toys dropped off at the store will be donated to foster and abused children through the county Department of Children and Family Services.

Valley man gets life term in prison

Van Nuys Superior Court Judge Barry Taylor gave Jose Cruz, 25, the maximum sentence for the May 24, 2001, slaying.

A jury deliberated about two hours Sept. 18 before finding Cruz guilty of murdering Richard Mendez.

 money sent to general fund

The City Council on Friday approved the transfer of $184 million from the Department of Water and Power to the city's general fund, as part of an increased transfer approved earlier this year to help balance the city budget. The DWP typically transfers excess revenue to the general fund every December, but the amount for the energy system was raised to 7 percent of total revenue, up from 5 percent previously, while the water system transfer was maintained at 5 percent. The total transfer amount was approximately the same as the city had estimated in its projected budget for the year.

Date set for Blake in second lawsuit

A judge on Friday set a Jan. 15 deposition date for actor Robert Blake in the wrongful-death suit filed on behalf of the children of his wife, who was killed last year outside a restaurant where the couple had dined.

Blake, who is charged with the slaying of Bonny Lee Bakley, will be deposed at the Men's Central Jail, where he has been in custody since his arrest in April.
