BRIEFLY LOS PADRES BLAZE BURNS 100 ACRES.


LOS PADRES NATIONAL FOREST - About 100 acres were consumed in a brush fire in the Los Padres National Forest on Saturday, with firefighters expected to have the blaze contained early today, officials said.

About 450 firefighters were called to the scene in the steep terrain of Santa Paula Canyon, about 20 miles east of Ojai. One firefighter was injured when a rock fell on his leg.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Big Spin winner will buy wife car

SACRAMENTO - A Simi Valley school custodian was the top winner on Saturday's Big Spin show, taking home $100,000 for his turn at the wheel.

Art King Jr. said he planned to buy his wife a new car with his winnings because her old one broke down on the way to the show.

28,000 help clean up state beaches

More than 28,000 volunteers picked up trash from shores around the state Saturday in the 17th annual California Coastal Cleanup. In all, 314,430 pounds of trash and 49,228 pounds of recyclables were collected.

Staring match triggers shooting

PALMDALE - Hurricane Lee, a 26-year-old Lancaster man, was shot to death early Saturday after he and his companion got into a staring match with two suspects inside a Mexican restaurant in the 400 block of East Palmdale Boulevard, a sheriff's deputy said.

Two suspects fled on foot. Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call the sheriff's Homicide Bureau.

Water park threat brings evacuation

SANTA CLARITA - Six Flags California's Hurricane Harbor water park was evacuated late Saturday afternoon after some men told a park employee they put dynamite in a locker room, authorities said.

The California Highway Patrol and Sheriff's Department responded and called in an arson and explosives team which determined the report to be false. One man was arrested on suspicion of filing a false bomb report, police said.
