Sophomore Minas Nordanyan of Van Nuys finished fourth overall, with six wins and one loss in the high school category, which included some 1,500 competitors, according to Stephen Hughes, Monroe's coach. The first-place winner was Hikaru Nakamura of White Plains, N.Y.

Monroe, state champions, came in 12th out of 317 high school teams in the overall competition, and fourth in the ``blitz,'' or speed competition.

Alen Melikadamyan, a student at Toll Middle School in Glendale, took first place in the K-8 category, out of some 700 competitors.

The 32-year-old man died when his 1986 Dodge Caravan went off the road on a sharp turn north of Sycamore Canyon Road around 7:30 p.m. and plunged off the rocky cliff to the surf below, authorities said.

Adams, who was not wearing his seat belt, was ejected from his vehicle and was found floating in the water.

Authorities said Adams was traveling north at an unknown speed on the highway when he failed to negotiate a sharp turn just north of the state park at Sycamore Canyon Road, then lost control of his vehicle.

Four people hurt in 2-car collision

NORTHRIDGE - Two people were critically injured and two were seriously injured Sunday in a two-car crash at the corner of Nordhoff Street and Winnetka Avenue, a city fire spokesman said.
