A service will be held at 4:30 p.m. today for Great Britain's queen mother, who died March 30 at the age of 101.

Suspect in slaying jailed in Louisiana

A Los Angeles murder suspect on the run since being suspected of stabbing a friend to death in September was arrested in the French Quarter in New Orleans New Orleans (ôr`lēənz –lənz, ôrlēnz`), city (2006 pop. 187,525), coextensive with Orleans parish, SE La., between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain, 107 mi (172 km) by water from the river mouth; founded , police said Saturday.

Kimberly Strand, 36, was arrested Thursday night, authorities said. Strand, who was featured on the television show ``America's Most Wanted'' in January, was arrested without incident and was in Central Lockup See hang and abend. .

Los Angeles police said Strand and a friend are suspected of the Sep. 24 killing. The victim, whose name was not immediately available, was beaten and stabbed to death in his Los Angeles apartment.

City helping build low-income units

Burn should help restore local flora

AGOURA - Firefighters are scheduled to ignite 200 acres in the Cheeseboro Canyon area on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday as part of a prescribed burn, authorities said.

The burn is expected to help restore native perennial grasslands and coastal sage scrub Coastal sage scrub (or simply coastal scrub) is a low scrubland plant community found in the California chaparral and woodlands ecoregion of coastal California and northern Baja California.  in areas where exotic grasses have taken over, officials said.

Firefighters battle Griffith Park blaze

Firefighters battled a brush fire just west of the Griffith Observatory in Griffith Park on Saturday, a Fire Department spokesman said.

The fire, reported about 6:20 p.m., had consumed a quarter-acre of grass, said Bob Collis of the Los Angeles Fire Department The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), also known as the Los Angeles City Fire Department to distinguish it from the Los Angeles County Fire Department. It is the agency that provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the city of Los Angeles. .

Festival planned for Thai New Year The Thai New Year (Thai: สงกรานต์ Songkran) is celebrated every year on 13 April to 15 April.  

NORTH HOLLYWOOD - Thai New Year is scheduled to be celebrated today at Wat Thai Temple, organizers said.

Fire damage set at $2.2 million

SOUTH GATE - A fire at a plastics manufacturing firm that shot columns of flame 100 or more feet high and forced nearby residents to flee caused $2.2 million in damage to the factory and its contents, officials said Saturday.

No one was hurt in the fire, which was contained early Saturday about four hours after it began. About 200 residents were allowed to return to their homes at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday, police Lt. Darren Sullivan said.

The fire briefly flared up again Saturday afternoon but was quickly knocked down.

It was not known what started the blaze, which raged across an industrial yard owned by Productivity California. Hundreds of plastic containers and empty 50-gallon drums fed the fire, Fire Inspector Mike Brown said.
