Psychiatric unit closure planned

SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  - Simi Valley Hospital's behavioral health unit, which cares for adult psychiatric patients, will close within 60 days, officials announced Friday.

Efforts are under way to relocate about 40 employees, including nurses, therapists and social workers, to other units at the hospital or other local hospitals in the Adventist system, said Alicia Gonzalez, a spokeswoman for the hospital system.

The behavioral health unit usually cares for about 10 patients for periods of seven to 10 days. However, the number of patients has dropped to four to six in the past several months, too low to support the 32-bed facility, officials said.

Former patients will be notified of the closure and of other care options. If psychiatric patients come to the emergency room, they will be assessed and every effort will be made to get the care they need, officials said.
