Book fund asked for ailing schools

WATTS - While visiting a Watts school Friday, Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante said Jordan High and other low-performing schools in the state need a one-time, $100 million dose of textbooks.

The lieutenant governor said he and Assemblyman Carl Washington, D- Paramount, have asked state lawmakers to include a one-time augmentation.

Davis announces court promotions

Two longtime Los Angeles Superior Court commissioners were appointed to serve as judges, and three attorneys were appointed to serve as court commissioners, Gov. Gray Davis announced Friday.

Commissioners Norman Tarle and Allen J. Webster will be elevated to the position of judge. Harvey Giss, Kenji Machida and Margaret Henry were appointed to serve as commissioners.

Chevrolet dealer settles civil suit

EL MONTE - California's largest Chevrolet dealer agreed to pay $2.5 million to settle a civil case alleging that 1,500 customers who purchased new vehicles were misled, officials said Friday.

Gunderson Chevrolet in El Monte is expected to pay $1.5 million in restitution to customers as well as a total of $1.1 million in civil and administrative penalties to the state Department of Motor Vehicles In the United States of America, Department of Motor Vehicles (or DMV) is a commonly used name of the government agency of a U.S. state which administers the registration of automobiles (e.g., by issuing license plates), and/or the licensing of drivers (e.g.  and the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, officials said.

Disney parks hire own paramedics

ANAHEIM - Two teams of paramedics will be stationed at the two Disney theme parks beginning May 1, the company said.

The 12 paramedics are expected to shave precious minutes off response time to any incident in the parks. The city receives two to five emergency calls a day from Disney, officials said.

The Sept. 22 incident in which 4-year-old Brandon Zucker suffered brain damage after being pinned underneath a Roger Rabbit car was not a factor, said Disney spokesman Ray Gomez.

Court challenge by teachers loses

SACRAMENTO - A judge ruled Friday against teachers who challenged the rules for Gov. Gray Davis' most lucrative rewards program for test-score improvements, authorities said.

The lawsuit led the state to hold up the rewards, which range from $5,000 to $25,000 per teacher. Superior Court Judge Gail Ohanesian gave the teachers from Jedediah Smith Elementary in Sacramento time to appeal, so the money cannot be distributed for the next 60 days.

Marine sergeant dies in shooting

CAMP PENDLETON - Authorities said they were hunting Friday for a suspect who shot and killed a 23-year-old Marine from Houston.

Sgt. Brian G. Castellano-Reyes died Thursday from gunshot wounds to the head and chest, according to Lt. Greg Scott, a Marine spokesman.
