The crash happened about 7:30 p.m. on the Pearblossom Highway about 2 miles west of the Mojave Freeway, said Los Angeles police Officer Jason Lee.

Two veteran detectives were on duty in their detective vehicle, Lee said. They were on their way to Las Vegas, but it was unclear if they were conducting an investigation.

One of the detectives was killed in the crash, and another was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC) is a teaching hospital of Loma Linda University School of Medicine in Loma Linda, California, United States. Life term sought in run-down death

Prosecutors ruled out the death penalty and said life in prison would be sought for a woman charged with killing a Mexican immigrant with her car.

Marie Elise West, 38, who has a history of mental illness, is charged with running down Jesus Placencia, 65, in her car and killing him in the parking lot of a suburban Van Nuys bagel shop Sept. 1, 2000.

Witnesses said West used racial epithets in referring to her victim.

The District Attorney's Office charged West, who has since been found incompetent to stand trial, with murder and the special circumstance that the killing was a hate crime.

Issa prosecuted for fake car theft

Darrell Issa, the San Diego congressman leading the effort to recall Gov. Gray Davis, was prosecuted in 1980 for allegedly faking the theft of his Mercedes-Benz and selling the vehicle to a car dealer, it was reported Wednesday.

Issa issued a statement Wednesday blaming his brother, a convicted car thief, for the scheme, which was detailed in documents on file in Santa Clara County Superior Court.

Opponents of the recall called upon Issa to release his criminal record.

Issa, 49, had faced allegations of involvement in two other car thefts during past political campaigns, but the San Jose case hadn't become public knowledge until the San Francisco Chronicle The San Francisco Chronicle was founded in 1865 as The Daily Dramatic Chronicle by teenage brothers Charles de Young and Michael H. de Young.[2] The paper grew along with San Francisco to become the largest circulation newspaper on the West Coast of the  reported about it on Wednesday.

LOS ANGELES - USC researchers put out a call Wednesday for senior men for a study looking at ways of improving muscle mass and physical strength using testosterone and growth hormone growth hormone or somatotropin (sōmăt'ətrō`pən), glycoprotein hormone released by the anterior pituitary gland that is necessary for normal skeletal growth in humans (see protein). .

Men who are in ``relatively good health'' and between 65 and 90 years old are being sought for the 16-month study, said University of Southern California's Jon Weiner.
