2 men sentenced in aunt's killing

PASADENA - A Pasadena man and his roommate were sentenced Friday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the beating death of his 72-year-old great-aunt, whose bound body was found in a bathtub.

The District Attorney's Office decided not to seek the death penalty for Nathan Charles Sheard, 23, and David Talmadge, 25, who were convicted of special-circumstances murder in the April 1999 robbery and slaying of Gertrude Mills in her home on West Figueroa Drive in Altadena.

Sheard made no comment when sentenced by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Tricia Ann Bigelow. But his father maintained after the hearing that his son had wrongly been accused.

The judge called Mills' home ``a chamber of horrors'' and said the woman was struck in the head with a hammer, beaten and placed face-down in a bathtub with a portable heater placed on top of her.
