The City of Los Angeles was a streamlined passenger train jointly operated by the Chicago and North Western Railway and the Union Pacific Railroad.
 will hold a public meeting tonight on the proposed expansion of the Bradley Landfill in Sun Valley.

The meeting will start at 7 p.m. at the Sun Valley Recreation Senior Room, 8133 Vineland Ave. The meeting will focus on Waste Management Corp.'s plan to expand the landfill in two phases, first by adding 4.7 million cubic yards of capacity through a vertical expansion, and second by building a transfer station and a materials resource recovery facility.

The city's Planning Department is collecting comments on possible environmental impacts if Bradley Landfill and Recycling Center is expanded as proposed.

Grant to bolster teacher training

A $360,000 grant from ChevronTexaco Corp. was given to the Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population.  to give teachers additional training in Earth science, it was announced Wednesday.

``As a company, we place a very high value on the quality of K-12 education in the communities we serve,'' said Don Paul, vice president and chief technology officer of ChevronTexaco.

``We are pleased to support Superintendent (Roy) Romer's leadership in bringing a new emphasis on mathematics and science to the schools,'' he said.

Glendale woman is guilty of fraud

GLENDALE - A Glendale woman who worked as a loan officer at Downey-based Southland Credit Union pleaded guilty this week to four counts of bank fraud in connection with 17 bogus loans, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

Ibell Abellon, 39, faces a possible 18-month prison sentence for the orchestration of the loans, which led to about $267,000 in losses, officials said. The loans were made from January 2000 to October 2001, according to a statement from the office.

Abellon took out loans through a series of names and Social Security numbers other than her own and then used proceeds of new loans to pay off the older ones, the statement said. Sentencing is set for Feb. 24.

Valley soldier gets honor from panel

Jordan teacher removed from site

WATTS - A Jordan High School Jordan High School could be one of several high school, including:

 teacher was taken into custody Wednesday when he tried tried to dissuade students from returning to classes after the school was closed for two days because an artillery shell exploded Monday in a nearby scrap yard.

Superintendent Roy Romer was at the school and asked the school police to remove the teacher, who was handcuffed, a district official said.
