Secession talks set for Tarzana

TARZANA - The San Fernando Valley secession movement will be the topic of discussion at the Tarzana Property Owners Association's annual town hall meeting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Panelists invited to discuss secession include Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky; City Councilwoman Cindy Miscikowski; Richard Close, chairman of Valley Voters Organized Toward Empowerment; and Larry Levine, co-chairman of the anti-secession group One Los Angeles.

Activists to win college grants

High school seniors who are active volunteers can earn college scholarships from the Fernando Award Foundation Inc.

The organization will award scholarships of $1,000 each to 10 qualified seniors in June during their campus graduation ceremonies. Any high school senior may apply by filling out an application at a school career center or guidance department.

The deadline is May 1. Applications may be sent to the Fernando Award Foundation Inc., Galpin Ford, 15505 Roscoe Blvd., North Hills, CA 91343.

Quake-tracking network grows

Earthquake-monitoring technology developed for Southern California by the California Institute of Technology California Institute of Technology, at Pasadena, Calif.; originally for men, became coeducational in 1970; founded 1891 as Throop Polytechnic Institute; called Throop College of Technology, 1913–20. , the U.S. Geological Survey and others will benefit the entire state under an expanded network unveiled Tuesday, scientists said.

The network, which can create images known as shake maps, is intended to give emergency workers fast, complete information about areas where damage may have occurred after a temblor.
