BRIEFLY KINGS ADD EX-BRUINS COACH LEWIS, SIGN GOALTENDER AUBIN.

The Kings added former Boston and Detroit head coach Dave Lewis to their coaching staff Tuesday.

The 54-year-old Lewis has served as a head coach or assistant coach in the NHL for the past two decades. He earlier played 15 seasons in the league, including three with the Kings from 1979-83, the latter two seasons in which he was the team's captain.

The Bruins ousted him as coach in June, after they finished 35-41-6.

Also, the Kings signed goaltender Jean-Sebastien Aubin and re-signed defenseman Richard Petiot to one-year contracts.

The 30-year-old Aubin, signed to a two-way deal worth $525,000, played in 20 games for Toronto last season, posting a 3-5-2 record and 3.34 goals-against average.

The Kings also promoted Jamie Kompon to assistant coach and director of amateur development.

FOOTBALL: His transfer to Granada Hills High ruled invalid Monday, quarterback Greg Jimenez returned to his former school, Chatsworth, and he's slated to play his first game in Week 3 after participating in the mandatory minimum of 10 practices.

Jimenez transferred during the summer, but the move was successfully challenged by Chatsworth.

Had Jimenez, who passed for more than 1,400 yards last season, not returned to Chatsworth, he would have been forced to sit out his senior year.

"I think the football team was shocked to see me back because it was an unexpected move when I left," he said. "The Granada Hills coaches said they will still support me, so there are no hard feelings."

SOCCER: Sevilla midfielder Antonio Puerta, 22, died three days after collapsing on the field during his team's Spanish league match against Getafe.

Puerta died of "multiple organ failure stemming from prolonged cardiac arrest" and subsequent coronary problems, Virgen del Rocio Hospital director Gimeno Guerrero said in a statement.

BASKETBALL: Houston guard Rafer Alston was charged with slashing a man's neck during a ruckus at a Manhattan nightspot. Alston was arraigned on felony assault charges before being released without bail.

Guard Kevin Martin agreed in principle to a contract extension, believed to be five years starting for the 2008-09 season, with Sacramento.

The Phoenix Suns and D.J. Strawberry, son of former Dodger Darryl Strawberry, have agreed to a two-year contract that guarantees their second-round pick a roster spot this season.

Swin Cash's layup with 8.5 seconds remaining in overtime lifted the host Detroit Shock to a 71-70 victory over the New York Liberty in the decisive Game 3 of their first round WNBA Eastern Conference series.

Deanna Nolan scored 22 points and Cheryl Ford added 17 points and 10 rebounds to help defending champion Detroit advance to the East finals against Indiana. Game 1 is Friday night at Indianapolis.
