BRIEFLY KAISER CELEBRATES 40TH ANNIVERSARY.


PANORAMA CITY - Kaiser Permanente Foundation Hospital celebrated its 40th anniversary Saturday with a carnival, entertainment and the announcement of grants to several community organizations.

Reading students to win video games

Los Angeles Unified students will be eligible to win video game consoles This is a list of video game consoles by the era they appeared in. Eras are named based on the dominant console type of the era (even though not all consoles of those eras are of the same type). Some eras are referred to based on how many bits a major console could process. , bikes and other prizes in a new reading contest, officials said Friday.

Students who enter the contest will be challenged to read six books from Monday until Aug. 9, and one of the books has to be about tennis, officials said. The contest is sponsored by the Southern California Tennis Association and Mercedes-Benz Cup.

Car chase leader sentenced in court

BURBANK - A Westlake Village woman who rammed into two Glendale police cruisers after leading authorities on a car chase in May was sentenced Friday to three years' probation and 270 days in a mental health residential program.

Devi Jordan, 27, pleaded no contest in Burbank Superior Court to assault with a deadly weapon Assault with a Deadly Weapon is the term used to describe the act of threatening to harm one or more people by using a weapon (usually a firearm). Here, assault must be differentiated from battery as they are often confused. Assault is threatening to use force.  for using her car to cause injury, evading police and numerous traffic violations after the chase from Van Nuys through Burbank and Glendale.

Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department's Van Nuys Division had tried to stop Jordan on a traffic violation, but she kept driving. The chase ended in a cul-de-sac, and Jordan tried to escape by ramming two Glendale Police Department cruisers that had boxed her in.

Lineman's Rodeo draws about 1,000

IRWINDALE - Southern California Edison's annual Lineman's Rodeo was held Saturday at Santa Fe Dam Recreational Area, drawing about 1,000 people for the lineman competition, kids' rides and a barbecue.

Workers in hard hats and boots climbed up and down telephone poles, replacing wires, testing electricity and helping co-workers while crowds looked on during the annual event.

Survey seeks more Southland spiders

The Southern California Spider Survey met its goal of netting 1,000 arachnids brought to the Los Angeles County Museum Los Angeles County Museum, Los Angeles, Calif.
