Council names plaza for Bernardi

The Los Angeles City Council The Los Angeles City Council is the governing body of the City of Los Angeles, California, United States.  voted Friday to give another honor to former City Councilman Ernani Bernardi Ernani Bernardi (October 29, 1911-January 4, 2006) was a politician in Los Angeles, California. He represented District 7 on the Los Angeles City Council from 1961 to 1993, a district that covered the east San Fernando Valley.  for his more than 30 years of service to the city.

The council voted to name the plaza in the Van Nuys Civic Center after Bernardi, who was a councilman for the area from 1961 to 1993.

``He was Mr. San Fernando Valley for years,'' Councilman Tom Labonge said. ``It's only fitting we do something like this in the heart of the Valley for him.''

Trespasser told to get counseling

A man who pleaded no contest Friday to trespassing at the Brentwood compound of Gov.-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver will undergo psychological counseling, a city attorney official said.

Richard Sathianathan, 32, also received credit for 50 days in county jail after pleading guilty to tampering with one of Schwarzenegger's vehicles, said Frank Mateljan of the City Attorney's Office.

According to Mateljan, in addition to being ordered into counseling, Sathianathan was sentenced to three years' probation and told to stay away from Schwarzenegger and his wife and their property, as well as the governor's mansion.

Pedestrian death 4th such fatality

GLENDALE - An 82-year-old man died Wednesday after he was hit by a car while trying to cross San Fernando Road San Fernando Road is a major street in the city and county of Los Angeles. It starts off in Castaic as The Old Road, passing through Santa Clarita and the Newhall Pass, where upon its intersection with Sierra Highway near the junction of the Golden State (I-5) and the , the fourth pedestrian fatality of the year in the city, police officials said.

Police said he was not in a marked crosswalk.

The victim, believed to be a resident of Los Angeles, was struck by a 1995 Mitsubishi Galant driven by Varuzhan Kizirian, 34, of Burbank. The fatality occurred at San Fernando Road near Garfield Avenue about 7:50 p.m., police said.

The victim, whose name was withheld pending notification of family, was transported to Glendale Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the car was released at the scene.
