A judge on Friday overturned the Los Angeles City Council's approval of a 40-acre commercial development at Taylor Yard, where the state and environmentalists want to create a park.

Man's surrender finishes standoff

VAN NUYS - A three-hour standoff at a Van Nuys hotel with a man believed to be armed and dangerous ended peacefully Friday, police said.

Man, 18, drowns on swimming trip

LITTLEROCK - An 18-year-old swimmer drowned Friday afternoon at Littlerock Dam, officials said.

The unidentified male, who had been swimming with friends, was pulled from the water by search-and-rescue divers just after 4 p.m., about an hour after his friends called 911 to report him missing.

'Kung Fu' actor's large dog stolen

NORTHRIDGE - The Los Angeles Police Department's Devonshire Division station was evacuated for about an hour, beginning after 9 p.m. Friday, when a man carried in an artillery ammunition round that he had found inside a storage locker.

A bomb squad was called in and determined it was an inert training round, officials said. LAPD personnel waited outside in the parking lot for about 45 minutes until the all-clear was given.
