BRIEFLY JEWISH GROUP GETS $12 MILLION GIFT.

Representatives for the Jewish Community Foundation of Los Angeles announced Monday that the organization had received the largest, single permanent gift in its history - a $12 million bequest from the estate of a Holocaust survivor and his wife.

The gift will serve as the cornerstone of the newly created Werner and Ellen Lange Endowment Fund, which is expected to generate about $500,000 a year to support initiatives and seed new projects.

Werner Lange, who died last year - three years after his wife - immigrated to the United States from Germany in the 1930s to escape Nazi persecution.

The couple married in 1941. Following Werner's service in the U.S. Army during World War II, he and his wife relocated to Los Angeles, where he established and built a substantial optical-instruments business.

to give riders of bikes a break

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority will offer free bus and rail rides on May 20 to commuters who participate in Southern California's Bike to Work Day, the transit agency announced Monday.

Nearly all Metro buses are equipped with bike racks in the front. Cyclists always can ride for no additional charge anytime on MTA buses equipped with bike racks. On May 20, their Metro bus ride also will be free.

Cyclists also can bring their bikes on Metro Rail and Metrolink trains for no additional charge, but since Metro Rail trains may be full during weekday rush hours, the MTA does not allow bikes on its trains from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. and from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. - unless trains are moving in a direction opposite the peak hour flow of commuter traffic on the Blue and Green lines or either direction on the Gold Line.

On Red Line subway trains, bikes are not allowed in either direction during peak hours from Union Station to Wilshire/Vermont.

For more information on Bike to Work Day and MTA-supported bike programs, go to www.metro.net or call (213) 922-2811.
