Stanford center Jason Collins announced Monday that he will enter the NBA draft. However, Collins will not hire an agent and left open the possibility of returning to school.

Collins, a junior from Harvard-Westlake, is scheduled to graduate in June but has two years of athletic eligibility remaining because of injuries early in his career.

Michael Schnyder of Glendale College and Mike Crawford of Valley College have signed letters of intent to play at Cal State Bakersfield. Schnyder, a 6-0 guard, was the Western State Conference most valuable player after averaging 18 points and 5.6 rebounds to lead the Vaqueros to the state tournament. Crawford, a Simi Valley High graduate and 6-6 forward, was a two-time All-WSC selection.

BASEBALL: USC submitted a bid to be host for one of 16 NCAA Regionals. Other West Coast teams expected to bid include Stanford, Cal State Fullerton and Arizona State. Sites will be announced on Monday.

AUTO RACING: Tony Stewart will be the busiest driver in the sport on May 27.

Stewart plans to drive in the Indianapolis 500 and, as he did in 1999, fly immediately to Charlotte, N.C., for NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600.

HOCKEY: Scott Niedermayer accused Tie Domi of threatening to hit him two games before doing so and even boasting it would be bad enough for a suspension.

In his first public comments since being knocked out Thursday by the Toronto Maple Leafs' forward, Niedermayer said Domi planned the attack in retaliation for a hit from the New Jersey Devils' defenseman.

FOOTBALL: University of Tennessee offensive tackle Michael Munoz will undergo surgery on his left knee this month and miss the 2001 season to recover.

The 6-foot-6, 310-pound native of Mason, Ohio, is the son of NFL Hall of Famer Anthony Munoz, a USC All-American.

SOCCER: Alexi Lalas, who ended a 1 1/2-year retirement to play for the Galaxy, will be sidelined indefinitely with a left-knee injury.
