Woman is given long prison term

NORTH HOLLYWOOD - A North Hollywood woman was sentenced Thursday to a 25-year-to-life prison term for the August 2001 beating death of her boyfriend's 3 1/2-year-old daughter.

Jenara Valle, 33, was convicted of assault on a child leading to the death of Maria Mejia.

Metrolink fares are boosted by 5%

The cost of riding on Metrolink trains rose by 5 percent, effective Thursday. A regular adult monthly pass will now cost between $90.75 and $309, depending on the number of zones it covers, Metrolink said.

Boland plans run for Valley council

Former Assemblywoman Paula Boland, who helped launch the current secession movement, has filed papers to run for city council of a new San Fernando Valley city.

Boland is running for the Valley city's third district, which already has three other candidates. While the official filing period for Valley city candidates has not begun, individuals may file papers now to create a campaign committee and raise funds.

Rent panel votes for moratorium

Los Angeles' rent adjustment commission voted Thursday to place a six-month moratorium on a city law that allows landlords to raise rents to market rates when they make at least $10,000 in improvements to a unit.

The moratorium would begin as soon as a citywide study is launched to determine the effects of the law on the housing market.

Parking price cut boosts revenues

As parking prices fell at the city-owned Hollywood & Highland garage, revenues have gone up, the area's City Councilman said Thursday.

Parking revenues have increased 28.9 percent and the number of vehicles using the garage has increased by 42 percent since the city in April approved the rate cut, from a $10 flat fee per vehicle to $2 for four hours, with validation, Councilman Eric Garcetti said.
