Base cuts feared in Ventura County

VENTURA - County supervisors blasted Gov. Gray Davis on Tuesday for cutting the state office that supports military bases.

Supervisor Judy Mikels said the decision couldn't come at a worse time because base closures are scheduled for 2005.

``Naval Base Ventura County contributes $1 billion to our county,'' Mikels said. ``In Simi Valley, 99 businesses contract directly or subcontract on the base.''

2 men deny rape in girl's initiation
