Shooter sought in driver's death

PANORAMA CITY - Police are seeking the public's help in finding a suspect who shot a 32-year-old motorist who then crashed a vehicle into the wall of a carwash and died at a hospital Tuesday.

The driver, identified as Alberto Hernandez of Compton, was shot by at least one occupant of a second vehicle as the two vehicles traveled westbound on Roscoe Boulevard, according to a police statement.

Woman, 26, dies in highway crash

PEARBLOSSOM - A 26-year-old woman killed in a Wednesday traffic collision in Pearblossom was identified as Karla Fiorella of Littlerock, according to the Coroner's Office.

Fiorella was driving a 1995 Acura west on Pearblossom Highway about 8:40 p.m. when she swerved into oncoming traffic, according to the California Highway Patrol.

 train strikes, kills one person

A man was hit and killed by a Metropolitan Transportation Authority train in front of the Florence Avenue station platform Thursday, authorities said.

Nobody on the train was hurt.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene after the 3 p.m. incident, Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Carlos Lopez said. His identity was not immediately released.

The train, carrying 400 passengers from downtown to Long Beach, was delayed for about 30 minutes, MTA spokesman Jose Ubaldo said.

Fuel assistance donors are sought

The Gas Co. on Thursday kicked off a campaign to raise $250,000 in donations to be used, in conjunction with matching funds from the utility, to help low-income residents pay for natural gas this winter.

The Gas Co.'s Gas Assistance Fund program has provided assistance of up to $150 on customers' winter natural-gas bills for the past 22 years.

The utility said in a statement that it is trying to raise $250,000, which it will match dollar for dollar.

Gas Co. customers wishing to contribute to the fund can mail their tax-deductible contributions to: United Way, Gas Assistance Fund, File 56826, Los Angeles, CA 90074-6826, or donate online by logging on to www.unitedwayla.org.

Lakers book drive will honor Hearn

The Los Angeles Lakers will conduct a book drive before Sunday's game on behalf of the Florence Avenue School and to honor the late legendary announcer Chick Hearn.

Books will be collected at Star Plaza at Staples Center from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. before the game against the New Orleans Hornets The New Orleans Hornets are a professional basketball team based in New Orleans, Louisiana. They play in the Southwest Division of the National Basketball Association (NBA). .

All fans donating books will receive a 2004-05 Lakers pin along with a sticker they can put into the book, commemorating their donation in Hearn's memory. The books will go to the school's library and classroom libraries.
