Architect chosen for civic center

CALABASAS - The City Council has approved selection of a Pasadena firm, Gonzalez/Goodale Architects, to design a new city hall, library and a performing-arts center.

The $16 million civic center will be built on a seven-acre site, near The Commons and the Kilroy Office complex, in a 67-acre development. City officials have called for a 25,000-square-foot city hall, 22,000- square-foot library and 4,000-square-foot performing-arts center.

Work will start with conceptual design, and a construction manager is expected to be selected in May.

Volunteers to help clean community

AGOURA HILLS - Volunteers can help clean up and beautify the city by participating in the 13th annual Trashbusters Day program to be held Saturday.

Anti-drug party planned for teens

THOUSAND OAKS - An anti-drug party for teen-agers will be held from 7:45 to 11 p.m. April 28 at the Spectrum Club, 2400 Willow Lane.

The event is open to all students of middle schools and high schools. Cost is $7, but $2 discount coupons are available at the Spectrum.

Kids to fly kites at clean-air event

OXNARD - Kites will be given to the first 300 children who ask for them at a Clean Air Month celebration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 6 at the beach.

Each child will personalize a gift kite with three self-adhesive strips stating a pollution-reduction commitment such as riding a bike or walking to school or riding in a car pool.

The event will be sponsored by the American Lung Association The American Lung Association (ALA) is a non-profit organization that "fights lung disease in all its forms, with special emphasis on asthma, tobacco control and environmental health".  and Air Pollution Control districts of Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.

 will consider approving a $34,000 payment Tuesday to a Santa Paula-based company for the loss of 85 avocado trees during the construction of a channel near Santa Paula Creek.

The proposed payment would reimburse the Limoneira Co. at $400 per tree destroyed in a restoration project by the county Flood Control District and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Planners hoped to avoid damaging trees until the Corps of Engineers redesigned the project in September 2000, officials said.
