WOODLAND HILLS - A husband and wife jumped to the deaths off an eight-story parking garage Thursday in an apparent double suicide Double Suicide (心中天網島 Shinjû: Ten no amijima , police said.

Both people were pronounced dead when emergency workers arrived shortly after the jump at Canoga Avenue and Califa Street about 12:15 p.m. The couple had been despondent de·spon·dent

Head-on crash deadly to woman

WOODLAND HILLS - A woman believed to be in her 70s was killed Thursday when her car veered into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a van.

The woman was traveling west on Ventura Boulevard Ventura Boulevard is one of the primary east-west thouroughfares in the San Fernando Valley; as it was originally a part of the El Camino Real (the trail between Spanish missions), Ventura Boulevard is the oldest route in the San Fernando Valley. King wanted to serve his jail time on weekends - a common practice in San Bernardino County - and said he believed a judge only denied his request because of his notoriety.

The DUI conviction is the fifth drug-related offense to which King has pleaded guilty or no contest since October 2001. The previous four charges, all in Los Angeles County, landed him in court-ordered drug treatment programs.

Formal dedication set for new park

Months after opening to hikers and bikers, the new park formerly known as Ahmanson Ranch will be formally dedicated by state and local officials Saturday morning.

The new name, at least temporarily, will be the Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve. In agreeing to sell the 2,783-acre parcel, Washington Mutual asked that the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy is an agency of the state of California in the United States founded in 1979 and dedicated to the acquisition of land in the Santa Susana and Santa Monica Mountains and the Simi Hills, north and west of Los Angeles, for preservation as open  not use the Ahmanson Ranch name without the company's permission.

The sale was completed and the park opened to the public in December. The dedication at 10 a.m. Saturday will offer the rare opportunity for the public to drive into the new park. The entrance is at 25345 Mureau Road in Calabasas.

Property tax due Monday at latest

The second and final installment of the 2003-04 property tax is due no later than Monday to avoid late penalties, Los Angeles County officials said Thursday.

Mailed payments must be postmarked by Monday. Payments also can be made between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the first floor counters in the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration at 225 N. Pedestrian dies after being hit

SIMI VALLEY - A 75-year-old Simi Valley woman was struck and killed as she walked in a crosswalk early Thursday morning, police said.

Marie Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene of the 5:50 a.m. incident, Simi Valley police Sgt. Arch Morgan said.

Hernandez was walking south on Yosemite Avenue at Los Angeles Avenue when she was struck by an eastbound pickup driven by Michael Miller, 66, of Simi Valley.
