Ventura bicyclist is fatally injured

SANTA PAULA - One woman died and another was injured Wednesday when they were struck by a hit-and-run driver while riding their bicycles on Telegraph Road west of Santa Paula, authorities said.

Darlene Bryant, 54, of Ventura was pronounced dead at a hospital more than two hours after the 8:15 a.m. crash, a coroner's investigator said. An autopsy was scheduled for today.

The California Highway Patrol was searching for the driver of a dark metallic-green 1997 Honda sedan with windshield damage and a missing passenger-side mirror.

Firefighters can't save stuck horse

SANTA CLARITA - A 2,500-pound horse whose right rear leg became stuck in a septic tank died Wednesday during a rescue attempt by Los Angeles County firefighters, officials said.

Firefighters were called to 16726 Solana Lane in Canyon Country at 5:17 p.m. and used a crane in the rescue attempt.
