VENTURA - Pierre Durand Pierre Durand is the name of several people:
  • The inventor of tin cans, better known by his English name, Peter Durand.
  • A 1988 Summer Olympics French gold medalist in equestrian, jumping, individual.
, director of the Ventura County Health Care Agency, will discuss the status of programs and housing for the mentally ill during a local meeting of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Mental Health Training Room, 300 Hillmont St., Ventura. A support group for the families of mentally ill residents will meet at 6 p.m.

Teen dance club to make its debut

THOUSAND OAKS Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  - A summer teen dance club, The Fuse Box, will be open 8 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays, beginning next week, with bands and a professional DJ entertaining local residents ages 14-17.

The club, organized by the city's Youth Commission, will run through Aug. 29 at the Los Robles Robles is a common surname in the Spanish language meaning oaks, and may refer to:
  • Alfonso GarcĂ­a Robles (1911-1991), Mexican diplomat and politician
  • Aurora Robles (born 1980), Mexican fashion model
  • Charlie Robles (born 1943), Puerto Rican musician
 Inn, and will feature such bands as Blockade Runner, Acuma, No Intentions, Rendered, Talent Crisis and Exel Factor.

Admission is $5 at the door, and those attending must have valid Conejo Valley The Conejo Valley is a region spanning both Southeastern Ventura County and Northwest Los Angeles County in Southern California, United States. It was discovered in 1542 by Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, and eventually became part of the Rancho El Conejo land grant by  Unified High School District identification. Admission will be limited to 250 people.

Bikers' bar brawl charges dropped

VENTURA - Prosecutors have dropped a battery charge filed against a local Hells Angel following a bar brawl in December and so far have not filed charges against five other members arrested in the fracas, officials said Friday.

The felony charge against Brian Applegate, 26, was dropped during his June 28 preliminary hearing, said his attorney, Moriya Christie.

No charges have yet been filed against the five other Hells Angels arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon Assault with a Deadly Weapon is the term used to describe the act of threatening to harm one or more people by using a weapon (usually a firearm). Here, assault must be differentiated from battery as they are often confused. Assault is threatening to use force.  stemming from the Dec. 18 fight at Nicholby's bar in Ventura. They are George Christie George Christie may refer to:
  • George Christie, singer in Fort (band)
  • Sir George Christie, son of John Christie (Glyndebourne)
 III, 24; Vincent Dealba, 23; Alex Webster, 21; Sabian Reynoso, 24; and Edward Quintanilla, 45.

Prosecutor Bill Redmond did not return phone calls.

Congressman's aide open to talk

SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  - Terry Hiser, an aide to U.S. Rep. Elton Gallegly, R-Oxnard, will be available to meet with residents from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at Simi Valley City Hall, 2929 Tapo Canyon Road.
