BRIEFLY GREENBERG LEAVES COUNCIL RACE.


SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  - Former police officer Jack Greenberg said Monday he has dropped out of the race for City Council because he is too busy with the demands of his second career as a consultant.

Greenberg's departure leaves five candidates vying for two seats: incumbents Steve Sojka and Barbra Williamson, and challengers Brian Wilson, Charles P. Misseijer and Jim Mackelburg.

Cal Lutheran gaining respect

 ranked 21st in a survey of the top 25 colleges western regional colleges and universities, officials said Monday.

 moved up two notches in the survey released this month by U.S. News & World Report U.S. News & World Report

 America's Best Colleges Guide 2001 and U.S. News & World Report, which looked at schools' academic reputation, freshman retention rate and other factors.

Not guilty in 1998 stabbing

VENTURA - A 30-year-old associate of a Ventura-based white supremist gang pleaded not guilty Monday to perjury perjury (pûr`jərē), in criminal law, the act of willfully and knowingly stating a falsehood under oath or under affirmation in judicial or administrative proceedings.  and other charges in connection with the 1998 murder of a teenage runaway.

Kellie Rangel, of Camarillo, who is free on $70,000 bail, also pleaded not guilty to a charge that she acted to benefit a criminal street gang. Her trial is scheduled for March 5.

Rangel was indicted INDICTED, practice. When a man is accused by a bill of indictment preferred by a grand jury, he is said to be indicted.  by the Ventura County Grand Jury last month in the fatal stabbing of Nicole Hendrix, 17, at the Center City Motel in downtown Ventura. Five other gang members and associates were indicted at the same time charges including murder, kidnapping, robbery and perjury.
