BRIEFLY GRANDMA DIES, BOYS HURT IN CRASH.


RESEDA - A 67-year-old woman died of a possible heart attack Tuesday, and her two grandsons were seriously injured when she lost control of her car, crossed into opposing lanes and slammed head on into another car.

Mission College gets 3-year grant

SYLMAR - Los Angeles Mission College Los Angeles Mission College is a two-year community college located in Sylmar, California neighborhood of Los Angeles in the San Fernando Valley, United States. It is part of the Los Angeles Community College District.  was awarded a three-year federal grant totaling $322,608 to support long-range improvements in its math and science programs, officials said Tuesday.

The Minority Science and Engineering Improvement program is designed to produce long-range improvements in science and engineering education at predominantly minority institutions, and to increase the number of qualified minorities, especially women, in science and engineering careers.

The program includes institutional, cooperative, design and special project grants. This year, nearly 40 grants worth $4.5 million will be awarded nationwide.

MOORPARK - The threat of rolling blackouts has eased in southeastern Ventura County because of cooler weather and a new power supply line set up by Southern California Edison Southern California Edison (or SCE Corp), the largest subsidiary of Edison International (NYSE: EIX), is the primary electricity supply company for much of Southern California.  over police work schedules and ethics reforms. In a two-page letter to Hahn, Parks - one of his major challengers in next year's mayoral election - claimed Hahn had misrepresented his views.

The two have been exchanging increasingly bitter attacks over the past week, with Parks renewing calls to end the 3-12 work schedule of police officers.

Parks said that Hahn has been misrepresenting crime statistics from the time Parks served as chief and was avoiding taking responsibility for ethics problems in the city. Hahn had earlier criticized Parks for failing to back ethics reforms proposed by the mayor to control political activities of city officials.

Woman who took child being sought

MISSION HILLS - Police are seeking a 41-year-old woman who they said took her child from a family services facility Tuesday afternoon after distracting a court-appointed guardian.

Olivia Rodriguez took her 1-year-old son and ran out of the facility 11100 block of N. Sepulveda Boulevard and into a waiting vehicle and fled, Los Angeles police said.

SIMI VALLEY - A police standoff with a motorist who put a handgun to his head during a traffic stop ended peacefully but led to traffic jams Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

Starting at 1 p.m., crisis negotiators worked for several hours with the motorist near the intersection of Los Angeles and Yosemite avenues, said Simi Valley police Lt. Gordon Weeks. The man surrendered at 6 p.m.

Streets were cordoned off and traffic was diverted, he said.

The man, whose name was not immediately available, was taken for a mental evaluation, he said.
