BRIEFLY GIRL, 3, HURT IN FALL FROM 3 FLOORS UP.

VAN NUYS - A 3-year-old girl was in serious condition Thursday after she fell from a window of a third-floor apartment unit, authorities said.

The girl broke her lower right arm and cut her chin after in the 2 p.m. fall in the 7000 block of North Lennox Avenue, just as a bicyclist was passing by on the street below, officials said.

``She's a very fortunate young child,'' said Jim Wells, a spokesman with the Los Angeles Fire Department The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), also known as the Los Angeles City Fire Department to distinguish it from the Los Angeles County Fire Department. It is the agency that provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the city of Los Angeles. .

Wells said the bicyclist helped the child off the concrete and onto a grassy area, and a parent was also on the scene when authorities arrived.

The window screen was lying nearby, he said.

The girl was airlifted to Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, where she was listed in serious condition, Wells said.

It appears the fall was accidental, Wells said.

Wells warned parents to watch over their children, and make sure they do not play near windows regardless of whether there is a screen.

``Screens are designed to ventilate,'' he said. ``They are not designed to keep small children from falling out a window.''
