County sued over Cemex mine plan

Los Angeles County was sued Monday over a proposed gravel mine near Santa Clarita that opponents argue would increase traffic and have a negative impact on air quality and home values.

``It's not a surprise that it's happened because the city (of Santa Clarita) had indicated it was going to do this,'' said Richard Weiss of the County Counsel's Office.

He declined to comment further, however, because he has not seen the lawsuit.

The lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court challenges the environmental impact report on the proposed mine, which could produce up to 56 million tons of sand and gravel.

Cemex, the company that would do the mining, also is named in the suit. A representative for the Mexico-based company could not be reached for comment after regular business hours.
