Slaton, a resident of Lancaster, died Tuesday at age 53.

He was a coach for the District 51 Big League Softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  All-Stars, which won the national championship in 1996. His brother, Jim Slaton
    James Michael Slaton (born June 19, 1950 in Long Beach, California) was a pitcher with a 16 year career from 1971-1986. He played in the American League with the Milwaukee Brewers from 1971-1977 and 1979-1983, the Detroit Tigers in 1978 and 1986, and the California Angels
