Lowell knows first-hand that many of the tools children use to triumph over challenges must come from within. In reflecting on her own childhood and the resources upon which she drew, Lowell is able not only to help the children placed in her care, but herself as well. When interviewing female inmates seeking parole, Borges often asked them about their childhoods. Hearing their answers led the author to reflect upon the challenges she had faced in her own life. ``If the stories I heard from the imprisoned im·pris·on tr.v. im·pris·oned, im·pris·on·ing, im·pris·ons To put in or as if in prison; confine.
