BRIEFLY FIRE DEMOLISHES APARTMENT UNIT.

BURBANK - An electrical fire at an apartment complex in Burbank on Saturday destroyed one unit, causing about $70,000 damage, a battalion chief said.

The blaze was reported on Buena Vista Street between Oak Street and Verdugo Avenue about 9:15 a.m., said Battalion Chief Bill Sanders of the Burbank Fire Department.

Firefighters quickly doused the fire, which caused fire and smoke damage to one apartment, Sanders said.

A woman who lived in the apartment was displaced, Sanders said. No injuries were reported.

The cause was determined to be electrical, he said.

UC system crimes underreported

The University of California The University of California has a combined student body of more than 191,000 students, over 1,340,000 living alumni, and a combined systemwide and campus endowment of just over $7.3 billion (8th largest in the United States).  violated federal law by underreporting campus crimes but has since corrected the problem, the U.S. Department of Education found in an investigation prompted by a series of newspaper articles.

Investigators found the system is now complying with the law after it used the wrong standards to determine what crimes were reported and improperly had campus police review crimes to decide whether they should be included in annual reports required under the federal Clery Act The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act or Clery Act is a federal statute codified at 20 U.S.C.  1092(f), with implementing regulations in the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations at 34 CFR 668.46. .

The department also found that only campus police reported crime data - a task that should have been extended to other school authorities including deans, coaches and residence advisers.

The DOE investigation was launched in October 2000 after The Sacramento Bee reported that campuses ignored, misinterpreted or found loopholes to avoid the reporting requirements. The newspaper's investigation focused on a discrepancy between a high number of sexual assaults believed to have occurred and the small number reported by the university's nine campuses.
