BRIEFLY FERNANDO WINNER TO BE ANNOUNCED.


WOODLAND HILLS - The Fernando Award Foundation will announce the finalist for the 2004 Fernando Award at a dinner at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Warner Center Marriott Hotel.

The winner will be chosen from a group of five semifinalists, who were selected from an original group of 18 nominees. The five finalists are Jill Banks Barad, Stanley Bryant, J. Richard Leyner, William F. Powers Jr. and Bob Scott

High-speed crash kills motorcyclist

A motorcyclist was killed and a pedestrian was in critical condition Thursday after two unrelated hit-and-run crashes in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

The unidentified motorcyclist was killed about 1:30 a.m. in Panorama City. The victim was hit from behind by one of two motorcyclists riding with him at a high speed on Sherman Way near Woodman Avenue. The cyclist who hit the victim rode off after the collision, while the other remained at the scene, police said.

The second crash occurred about 5:30 a.m. at Lindley Avenue and Schoenborn Street in Winnetka, where a man suffered critical injuries when he was hit by an SUV as he crossed the street.

He was described as white, 5 foot 7 inches tall and 150 pounds, authorities said. He had no identification card, and was suspected of being drunk while crossing in an unmarked crosswalk.

Valley adobe gets federal funding

The Lopez Adobe in San Fernando was awarded $150,000 Thursday in federal funding for preservation efforts.

Police ask for tips on armed robbers

GLENDALE - Glendale police asked for help Thursday in finding two men who took $150,000 in jewelry Tuesday from a man's car as he waited for a gate to an underground garage to raise.

Parsegh P. Zobian was at 1636 N. Verdugo Road, and had just lowered the driver's side window, when someone pushed the barrel of a handgun against his left temple, police said.

Just then, another man yanked the car's right rear door open and took a blue Samsonite suitcase containing yellow metal necklaces, bracelets, earrings and watches.

The first suspect had a thin mustache and short, black wavy hair, police said. He was wearing a three-button green polo shirt.

Authorities had no description of the second suspect.

One person killed in West Hills crash

WEST HILLS - One person was killed and another was critically injured Thursday in a traffic collision.
