BRIEFLY FATHER, SON KILLED IN AUTO CRASH.

LANCASTER - A father and son from Bell Gardens died when their car ran off a two-lane road and crashed into a utility pole, California Highway Patrol officials said Monday.

The dead men were identified as Eugene Wittenberg, 76, the driver, and Robert Wittenberg, 42.

The Wittenbergs died about 3:30 p.m. Sunday on Avenue E east of 30th Street East. Their 1991 Chevrolet was heading west at an unknown speed when it drifted off the pavement and hit a utility pole, sheering the pole off at the ground, CHP officers said.

The car overturned, throwing out both men, who were not wearing seat belts. The crash left high-voltage lines laying along the ground. Edison officials said electricity was knocked out briefly to more than 280 customers. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
