 viral disease that affects chickens, turkeys and other birds but is not considered dangerous to people.

Gov. Gray Davis declared a state of emergency Wednesday over the outbreak, which was discovered last fall and now threatens California's poultry industry. Sick birds have been discovered in Littlerock, Lancaster and Santa Clarita, as well as elsewhere in Southern California.

California's last outbreak was in the 1970s, and some 12 million chickens and other birds were killed in the state's effort to control it.

School official held in sex case

The district includes eight public high schools, one trade school, and two continuation high schools in the cities of Palmdale
 officials said they did not know details about the investigation, but were cooperating with sheriff's officials.

Lara was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, high school officials said.
