Gerald C. Barnes is named in a 16-count indictment returned by a Los Angeles federal grand jury.

Prosecutors say he escaped from prison on Aug. 21, 2000, and was hired that September at the Family Medical Center. They allege that he worked there briefly until he was tracked down and arrested.

Barnes obtained the job after using false identification and the credentials of a real doctor named Gerald Barnes, who until recently practiced in Northern California, Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel Saunders said.

Councilman urges club safety review

Los Angeles City Councilman Jack Weiss on Tuesday called for a review of the city's fire inspection procedures, specifically as they relate to nightclubs.

Local memorials get funding boost

Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Pasadena, announced Tuesday the approval of $500,000 in federal funding to help build community memorials to honor fallen law enforcement or other public safety officers.

The funds were allocated as part of the Law Enforcement Tribute Act of 2001, which Schiff authored and introduced.

Search continues for cobra mailer

CANOGA PARK - Police on Tuesday continued the search for the person who mailed a Canoga Park songwriter a deadly cobra.

Joseff Calhoun, 30, of Canoga Park was the victim of an apparent attack by mail Friday. He opened up a package in his kitchen in the 6900 block of Jumilla Avenue, and inside was a rare South African black-necked spitting cobra.

Malanie Baghdaian, Calhoun's attorney, said her client doesn't know who might have sent the snake, and has shaken nerves because of the incident.

``He's trying to take it all in stride,'' she said. ``He's trying to go on every day to try to figure out what's going on What's Going On is a record by American soul singer Marvin Gaye. Spending limit concept approved

Ventura County supervisors on Tuesday approved the concept of spending and contribution limits in countywide races.

Under the proposed draft, candidates would be limited to maximum contributions of $600 per donor if they agreed to a voluntary spending limit of $150,000 per election.

Candidates would be faced with $300 contribution limits if they did not agree to spending limits.
