BRIEFLY DRUG SUSPECT DIES IN CUSTODY OF LAPD.


VAN NUYS - A narcotics suspect who complained of stomach pain died while in Los Angeles police custody early Friday.

The man was in the process of being booked into the Van Nuys Jail at 5 a.m. for possession of a controlled substance controlled substance n. a drug which has been declared by federal or state law to be illegal for sale or use, but may be dispensed under a physician's prescription.  when he complained of pain in his stomach, said Officer Don Cox.

Police summoned an ambulance but the man died while en route to a nearby hospital, Cox said. The Los Angeles Police Department's Critical Incident Investigation Division is handling the investigation.

, prosecutors in the office of District Attorney Steve Cooley have rejected a request by police internal affairs investigators to file criminal charges against Kalish, authorities said.

Prosecution is ``precluded'' by a U.S. Supreme Court decision last summer that struck down California's attempt to bring to justice older cases of sexual molestation molestation n. the crime of sexual acts with children up to the age of 18, including touching of private parts, exposure of genitalia, taking of pornographic pictures, rape, inducement of sexual acts with the molester or with other children, and variations of these , authorities said.

The court decision has forced Cooley to drop 11 ongoing prosecutions of priests charged with molesting youths, and to drop investigations of dozens of other cases.

Driver to face DUI, murder charges

SAN FERNANDO - Murder and felony DUI charges were filed Friday against an ex-con arrested after a rear-end, 100 mph-plus crash killed a man and two young children on the Ronald Reagan Freeway early Wednesday.

Authorities said a Chevrolet Corvette corvette, small warship, classed between a frigate and a sloop-of-war. Corvettes usually were flush-decked and carried fewer than 28 guns. They were widely employed in escorting convoys and attacking merchant ships during the great naval wars of the late 18th and  driven by Timothy Whelan, 35, struck a Honda Prelude whose driver apparently was trying to maneuver out of the way. Whelan is accused of three counts of murder and two felony driving under the influence counts, and is being held without bail at Men's Central Jail.

Authorities said the victims - a 35-year-old man, a girl about 8 to 10 years old and a boy about 5 - are still unidentified because their bodies were badly burned.

Angeles Forest opened to visitors

ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST The Angeles National Forest (ANF) was established by executive order on December 20, 1892 as the San Gabriel Timberland Reserve. It covers over 2,600 km² (650,000 acres) and is located in the San Gabriel Mountains of Los Angeles County, just north of the metropolitan area of Los  - The Angeles National Forest, closed since Oct. 27 due to the wildfire danger, reopened Friday to visitors.

However, officials warned that if conditions should worsen during the rest of November or December, the forest will be closed again.

Long terms given for gang shootings

VENTURA - A judge has ordered two gang members to spend what amounts to life in prison for killing a teenager and wounding two others in a shooting last year.

Pilot killed in crash in Ventura County

The pilot of a small plane was killed Friday after his aircraft plunged into the Santa Clara riverbed near Ventura, authorities said.

A witness saw the plane go down about 3:25 p.m. near Los Angeles Avenue in the community of Saticoy, Ventura County sheriff's Capt. Bruce Norris said.

The unidentified pilot was alone in the plane when it went down. No one on the ground was injured. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
