 formally asked the state water board to uphold a requirement that a double-liner system be installed under the area where the Sunshine Canyon Landfill is scheduled for expansion into Granada Hills.

The Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board had ordered the double liner because of neighbors' concerns that the landfill could leak pollutants and taint taint

Area speech team state champion

Rolland Petrello, one of the coaches, said Moorpark has the best speech and debate record of any community college in the nation, and this was the team's most dominating performance in the state championships in more than a decade.

The team is prepping now for the national championships to be held in Woodland Hills in early April.

L.A. homeless get beds year-round

Los Angeles city officials joined with housing advocates Tuesday to announce the year-round availability of beds for the homeless.

Working through the Los Angeles Housing Department and the Community Redevelopment Agency, Mayor James Hahn and other officials announced $200,000 will be made available toward the $1.9 million needed for the year-round program.

Originally, the shelter program was operated only during winter months.

Hahn pushed to expand it to a year-round program to try to develop more-comprehensive programs to deal with the homeless.
