BRIEFLY DRINKERS SETTING FOREST BONFIRES?

The Forest Service this week issued a reminder that campfires and charcoal barbecues are prohibited in all areas of the Los Padres National Forest Los Padres National Forest is a forest located in southern and central California, which includes most of the mountainous land along the California coast from Ventura to Monterey, extending inland. Elevations range from sea level to 8,831 feet.  because of extreme fire danger.

Most forest users were abiding by the rules, but problems in a few areas are posing a serious threat to public safety, said Forest Supervisor Jeanine Derby.

``We expected that there would be some violations of the fire restrictions, and we do continue to find the occasional illegal campfire,'' Derby said. ``Of even greater concern, however, is the fact that we are finding evidence of very large bonfires in some areas. The fires seem to be associated with group gatherings, mostly teen drinking parties.''

The public is being encouraged to report any unsafe and illegal fire threats by calling 911. For more information about forest conditions and fire restrictions, call (805) 968-6640.
