BRIEFLY DEPUTY PLEADS GUILTY TO SPOUSAL BATTERY.

VENTURA - Just as his trial was set to begin, an 18-year sheriff's deputy pleaded guilty Thursday to misdemeanor spousal battery in a deal with prosecutors who want to end his career.

Gary Hughes, 40, of Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  faces a maximum of one year in jail when he is sentenced June 1 for assaulting his wife Sept. 11 and 16.

``Going into a jury trial, nothing is ever a sure thing,'' prosecutor Adam Pearlman said in explaining the plea bargain plea bargain n. in criminal procedure, a negotiation between the defendant and his attorney on one side and the prosecutor on the other, in which the defendant agrees to plead "guilty" or "no contest" to some crimes, in return for reduction of the severity of the .

``We wanted to make sure he was convicted because it was so important for us ensure the safety of the public by making sure he was never a peace officer again. He's demonstrated he cannot be given that sort of responsibility.''

Under state law, Hughes' conviction will prohibit him from owning a firearm firearm, device consisting essentially of a straight tube to propel shot, shell, or bullets by the explosion of gunpowder. Although the Chinese discovered gunpowder as early as the 9th cent., they did not develop firearms until the mid-14th cent.  for 10 years.

He originally was charged with two felony counts of spousal battery and single felony counts of making terrorist threats, brandishing a police-issue baton and falsely imprisoning his wife in their home.

If found guilty, he would have faced up to three years in prison, said his attorney, Kevin DeNoce.

``Considering the fact that the District Attorney's Office was willing to reduce the charges and the distress and anguish it would have put Mr. Hughes' family through with the trial, despite our contentions over the allegations, we believed that it was in everyone's interest to resolve this case short of a trial,'' DeNoce said.

Hughes has been free on $20,000 bail since his arrest in September and is currently on administrative leave from the department, authorities said.
